Three years in the making, this is the burger bar Hobart needs. We were lucky enough to be invited for a sneak peak.

There wouldn’t be many locals who haven’t visited The Standard, a takeaway down a laneway consistently serving up some of the best burgers in Tasmania. Such was their popularity that an expansion was always on the cards and after years of planning it’s finally here with Standard Drinks opening next door in the old Tattoo Parlour.

There’s a lot that is familiar. All your favourites from The Standard appear on the menu such as the burgers and fries. But there is much more on offer.
The interior is funky and stylish. Licensee Christian Ryan pointed out some of the details such as the original wallpaper and timber from the old building which have been retained as features. There’s a pinball machine and television playing American shows. Old movie posters are splattered over the ceiling. Neon features everywhere.
The drinks list is as eclectic as the decor. Featured are 80’s inspired cocktails with a twist made by a skilled bar team but there’s also a great range of American and local beers. Willie Smith is on tap and a small but considered wine selection is available with a good mix to choose from.
Staff are friendly and knowledgeable without being pretentious. You’ll feel welcome here.
The food, as mentioned, features a lot from the takeaway. Which is a good thing, the burgers are even better eaten straight away. There’s also fantastic new additions such as fried chicken and American pies with more planned.

The wings are some of the best you’ll find and will draw a crowd alone. Giant, juicy and flavoursome with a crispy coating. The sides a traditional yet perfect accompaniment. The burgers I’ve raved about before so will spare further ramblings, just go try if you haven’t already.
Much is planned such as opening up Pilgrim next door for busy nights and functions, and an expanded cocktail and drinks list. It’s a great venue with a lot of good times ahead. Go for the food or the drinks and stick around and make it yours.
Standard Drinks opens Thursday 6th July at 50 Liverpool St serving up food and drinks 7 days a week from 4pm. Facebook / Website
