Franklin are presenting a very special dinner on the 28th of May to raise funds in support of mental health through the Menzies Institute. Tickets are $200 for a set menu with matched wines presented by David Moyle and Lilly Trewartha.
Richard and Julian Hensens, formerly of The Republic Bar, are opening Bar Wa Izakaya just down the road. Described as a being a Japanese Gastro-Pub it is planned for opening in early June.
Despite a lot of talk last year about the resurgence in “Midtown”, the strip between the CBD and North Hobart, we’ve lost a lot of businesses in a very short period of time. Gone in the last month are Pashas, Tickled Rib, Kentucky Rain, Amor Coffee, Golden Panther , TASpice and Frankies Empire.
Also sadly closed is PerMission to Eat on Barrack Street.
Details for the Dark Mofo + City of Hobart Winter Feast are starting to be announced. The event will run over two weekends this year, 9th-11th and 15th-18th of June from 4pm-10pm. Tickets range in price from $10-$20 depending on the night and entry after 8pm is free. A season pass covers every night and offers priority entry for $50. We’ve been promised a lot of exciting new collaborations and features this year.

The Australasian Barbecue Alliance recently held their first Tasmanian smoked meats competition as part of Hobart Blues and BBQ Festival 2017. Congratulations to the local winners The Smoking Devils with Victoria’s Big Smoke BBQ coming second and Binalong Smoke rounding up the top three. We were fortunate to be invited onto the judging panel and will have a full round up soon.
The Music Bar has opened in Salamanca serving from breakfast through to tapas in the evenings.

The long running Anatolia in North Hobart has closed with Culinary King Indian Restaurant opening in it’s space.
The Fresh Hop Brew Festival runs in Launceston 21st-23rd of April celebrating the hop harvest season. As well as over 25 breweries to sample there is also master classes, food and entertainment.

Crumb Street Diner has opened in New Town with a bistro planned for the front half of the building still to come.
